Farming Without Soil | Odisha Youth Shows Way In Hydroponic Farming

No matter what you are farming, you thought the most important ingredient is ‘soil’.Well, you are mistaken and Ashish Mohanty of Jagatsinghpur district will show you how.

Ashish is using Hydroponics, which is a type of farming without soil. This technique uses mineral nutrients in a liquid solution to grow plants. And using this new technique, 29 year-old Ashish is proving to be an inspiration for the youths of Odisha.

I have done MSc in chemistry from VSSUT Burla College in Odisha. Earlier, I was working in Asian Paints as a production officer in Hyderabad. I came across this method of farming through my sister, following which I went for a Hydroponics training workshop. This method uses 90% less water for farming and we can grow more plants in less space. There are no chemicals or pesticides used in this method of farming. The groundwater level is slowly declining and due to increase in population, land available for agriculture is also decreasing. Using Hydroponics technique, we can grow more using less water.

Ashish is a resident of Sujanga village of Jagatsinghpur district. His father Narottam Mohanty is a retired employee of the State Fisheries Department. His mother, Kiranbala Mohanty, is a homemaker.

We are supporting Ashish physically, mentally and financially. He has been at home since November 2019. During this time he started Hydroponic farming on our rooftop in just 800 square feet area and it has been successful.

It will take some time for me to create a market base here. But I believe within 2-3 years, I will be fully settled. Even if you are not working, you can start some project of your own, without being completely dependent on the Government. If you are able to show potential, Government may come forward and provide some assistance.

After succeeding in Hydroponics on his rooftop, Ashish has developed a Polyhouse in their backyard, in which he is successfully growing leafy and exotic vegetables.

When he was staying outside, we were worried about his health and well-being. Now that he is living here and doing what he loves, we are happy for him. All the family members are supporting him.

This decision of Ashish has been well-accepted by his parents who proudly say that getting a job is never the ultimate objective of education.

It is the choice of children.Whichever path they choose for themselves, as long as it is beneficial for them, and they are satisfied, we should help and support them.

Such endeavour of Asish is truly inspiring and must be encouraged on at larger level.
